A selection of works from one of the masters and prominent contemporary Indian artists

Curated for art lovers, aspiring collectors, and seasoned aficionados

by Sukruti Singh With years of experience in showcasing India’s finest contemporary art.

Artist: Achuthan Kudallur

Achuthan Kudallur: The Poetics of Colour and Silence

The exhibition celebrates the life and art of Achuthan Kudallur (1945–2022), one of India’s most significant abstract painters whose work transformed colour into emotion and silence into form.

Born in Kudallur, Kerala, Kudallur trained as an engineer before moving to Chennai, where he discovered his true calling in art. A largely self-taught artist, he began with figurative works and gradually evolved into pure abstraction, exploring the depth and intensity of colour with unmatched sensitivity.

Kudallur’s canvases—marked by vibrant reds, serene blues, and luminous yellows—embody a meditative rhythm. His abstraction was not decorative but deeply personal, reflecting memory, mood, and the inner landscape of thought. A key figure of the Madras Art Movement, his works bridged discipline and spontaneity, emotion and restraint.

Recipient of the National Academy Award (1988) and the Tamil Nadu Lalit Kala Akademi Award (1982), Kudallur exhibited widely across India and abroad, with works held in major collections including the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi.

This presentation honours Achuthan Kudallur’s enduring legacy—a visionary who made colour his language and silence his signature.

Art Vista Presents - LEGACY & BEYOND A Grand Art Exhibition Celebrating Modern and Contemporary Masters

A Journey from Modern Masters to Contemporary Voices

Legacy & Beyond brings together works by India’s most celebrated artists, offering a dialogue between artistic generations and philosophies. The exhibition features legendary names such as Nasreen Mohamedi, S. H. Raza, F. N. Souza, B. Prabha, B. Vithal, Badri Narayan, Satish Gujral, Suhas Roy, and Yashwant Shirwadkar, alongside dynamic contemporary creators including Amol Pawar, Chintan Upadhyay, Ajay Samir, Abhisha Pradhan, and others.

Each artwork becomes a passage through time — a reflection of legacy, spirit, and imagination that continues to shape India’s cultural landscape.

Featured Highlights

Nasreen Mohamedi – Untitled (Pen and Ink on Paper, 24" x 22")

A pioneering abstractionist, Mohamedi’s minimalist lines explore rhythm, silence, and structure. Her work in Legacy & Beyond represents the meditative geometry and discipline that defined her artistic philosophy — purity of thought rendered through the precision of ink.

F. N. Souza – Untitled (Ink on Paper, 11" x 8.5", 1983)

Souza’s distinctive figuration and raw expressionism bring psychological depth to form. This ink study captures his characteristic tension between beauty and distortion, intellect and instinct — a window into the artist’s enduring critique of human complexity.

Badri Narayan – “A Pot of Flowers” (Mixed Media on Paper, 22" x 22")

Evocative and poetic, this composition blends mythology and metaphor. Narayan’s figures exist in a timeless world — part dream, part folklore — revealing a gentle narrative about connection, offering, and the human condition.

The exhibition will be inaugurated by Dr. Sanjay Bhide, Founder of the Trans Asian Chamber of Commerce & Industry, on 7th October 2025 at 5:30 PM.

“Wandering Eye” An Exhibition of Photographs by Sateesh Dingankar in Jehangir Art Gallery

This show will be inaugurated on 8th October 2025 at 5pm by Honourable Guests - Prakash Bal Joshi(Veteran Visual Artist), Dr. Sanjay Bhide ( Founder, Convenor and secretary TACCI, Mukesh Parpiani(Legendary Photojournalist)

Photography has always been a way of holding a mirror to the world. But in these images, the mirror is tilted—revealing not only what is seen, but also what is suggested, what lies between perception and imagination. These photographs by Sateesh Dingankar listen to the quiet gestures of the world— a twig casting shadows that dance, a crack turning into an exclamation, a tree trunk whispering a human form. Light bends, metal shimmers, rust deepens into memory. Ants march, a snail hesitates, nature leans against the man-made, and even what is discarded smiles back. In this exhibition, photography is not just documentation, but meditation. It is a practice of finding poetry in surfaces, gestures, and fleeting light—reminding us that the extraordinary is often hidden in plain sight.

"Bold & Beautiful" An Exhibition of Paintings & Sculptures By Samruddha Purekar & Kishor Purekar in Jehangir Art Gallery

Kolhapur based well-known artist Samruddha Purekar and sculptor Kishor Purekar will be displaying their recent work in Jehangir Art Gallery, Kala Ghoda, Mumbai from 30th September to 6th October 2025 between 11am to 7pm

This show will be inaugurated on 30th September 2025 at 5pm by Hon’ble Guest Ms. Nidhi Choudhari, IAS Director – National Gallery of Modern Art, Mumbai.

Samruddha Purekar

In a world consumed by constant motion and noise, these artworks by Samruddha Purekar arrive as rare sanctuaries of calm. Rooted in the timeless language of black and white, they stand as a homage to an era where simplicity held power and every shade carried profound meaning.

Through her mastery of contrast, Samruddha transforms light and shadow into living dialogues—where stillness balances movement and serenity rises from chaos. These fine artworks do not merely decorate a wall; they inhabit the space, infusing it with silence that speaks louder than words.

Critics describe these artworks as “black-and-white storytelling at its most profound”—creations that invite viewers to pause, reflect, and immerse themselves in the elegance of restraint. Each stroke is deliberate, every form a fragment of narrative, pulling the observer into a meditative conversation between the soul and the surface.

What sets these works apart is the emotional resonance they bring into daily life. In homes and collections, this type of rare art becomes more than an object of beauty—it becomes a companion of tranquility, presence, and timeless grace.

For collectors and connoisseurs, the upcoming exhibition, Bold and Beautiful, offers an experience not to be missed. These fine artworks embody both sophistication and serenity, promising to remain memorable long after the first encounter.

 Kishor Purekar

Kishor Purekar is an international artist. In 2020, he won the prestigious Signature Status award from the Portrait Society of America. He happens to be the only Indian sculptor to be conferred with this achievement. Two other Indian artists have won, but he is the only sculptor.

His 30 years of experience speak volumes about why he has won this award. Realism in art is not something that everyone can practice daily. It is not just a technical skill to bring the likeness of the subject. The real artist evokes emotions beyond the likeness. The personality, the mood, and the character are his forte. During live demonstrations, it is like watching a magic show where a mere lump of clay gets transformed into a real human being in just a matter of a couple of hours. Besides being a traditional artist, he has now developed himself to match the ever-evolving technology and has successfully completed several projects for large-scale works.

Can it be called a curated exhibition? - - Sakharam Binder

I landed from Delhi and made my way straight to Show at Jehangir Art Gallery. After navigating the nightmare of Mumbai traffic, I was greeted by a buzzing opening preview—an eager crowd of familiar faces from the city’s art circle, all gathered to mark the occasion. The atmosphere was festive, the energy palpable, and it was a pleasure to reconnect with colleagues and acquaintances.

Yet once the formal speeches were done, the celebratory mood quickly dissolved into disappointment. Walking through the exhibition felt less like encountering a thoughtfully curated show and more like scrolling through a random Google search for “Indian art”—a jumble of images without context, hierarchy, or purpose. There was no attempt to explain why these works were chosen, or what larger narrative they were meant to construct.

With over sixty artists represented, the show became, in the local parlance, a bhel puri of artworks: a confusing mix of old masters, established names, and newly-minted “influencer-artists” and some really bad artists. To organize for star power alone does not amount to curation. Instead of a dialogue between works, there was no sense - paintings and sculptures put together competing for attention, and indifferent lighting that flattened rather than elevated the experience. What might have been a moment of reflection on twenty-five years of artistic journeys devolved into the visual equivalent of a college annual exhibition, where each work shouts only for itself—not in brilliance, but in desperation—at the mediocrity of the show.

Curation at its best provides coherence, rhythm, and meaning, weaving diverse works into a compelling narrative. At its worst, it reduces even strong works to fragments of incoherence. Sadly, this exhibition fell into the latter category. All works are jammed together like leftovers at a buffet. Star names were sprinkled in like garnish, but even they couldn’t rescue the mess. This wasn’t curation; it was a jumble sale.

What makes the situation more perplexing is the presence of a “senior curator, well known critic and cultural theorist” at the helm. The only explanation offered in the curatorial note was the phrase “an assembly of diverse voices.” But if the task is merely assembly, then a gallery boy (assistant) could have achieved the same result. Why position such a random collection under the guise of curation? The show squandered its potential, leaving behind only frustration and a sense of missed opportunity.

Perhaps next time “the curator” might take the responsibility of shaping a vision rather than simply arranging objects Into a chaotic marketplace—or better yet, decline projects that reduce the role of curation to little more than decoration as a glorified assembler for the wealthy.

Saikat Baksi’s “Trapped” Solo Show Opens at Vesavar Art Gallery

Vesavar Art Gallery is hosting a thought-provoking solo exhibition by author-artist Saikat Baksi, titled “Trapped”, running until September 9, 2025. The show presents conceptual artworks created over the past 15 years, reflecting the artist’s deep engagement with the human condition.

Baksi believes an artist must spend more time living life than before the canvas, since creativity, for him, arises from the victories and defeats of mortal existence. His works probe how mankind is ensnared in cobwebs of desire, greed, fear, sorrow, and ambition. He compares humanity to passengers aboard a train rushing toward destruction, too afraid to jump despite knowing the end.

The collection portrays the suffocating traps of habits, conventions, and comfort zones—bondages that people often accept unconsciously. Each piece conveys a sense of confinement, revealing the masks of diplomacy, hypocrisy, and falsehood that dominate modern life.

Baksi, widely recognized as a bestselling author of six novels and a book of poems, is also known for his podcast Art Beyond Canvas, where he discusses unusual turns in art history. His artworks, dark in tone and unflinching in subject, may divide opinion, but they demand attention and are not easily forgotten.

With “Trapped”, Vesavar Art Gallery offers viewers an unsettling yet memorable encounter with an artist who refuses to soften the truth.
